By the mid-’90s, local artists and activists had the area designated as the “Art District.” The area has since transformed into a hip arts district with loft apartments, theaters, galleries, and restaurants. Throughout the ’70s and ’80s, the area started to evolve into an arts scene.

In the mid-’70s the area was full of warehouses and factories. The Los Angeles street art scene is booming in the downtown arts district. The Natural History Museum in Los Angeles County has an exhibit called Tattoo, dedicated to the history of tattooing culture both globally and locally. Lawson, Owen Jensen, the great Sailor Charlie Barrs and many more-worked their magic upon customers. Within a several-block stretch, the talented bunch-including Bert Grimm, Ben Corday, Harry V. Main Stree t which served as the divide for East and West Los Angeles back in the day, was home base to an A-list of tattooers in the early part of the 20th Century.
